| Worms: The idea of your child having worms is rather unpleasant - but although they are very common, they are not serious and are quite easy to get rid of. The important thing is not to overreact or show your child the worms - as this can be more traumatic than any harm the worms may cause. Worms are parasites that live in the intestines or bowels. The most common type of worm in the UK is the threadworm. The eggs get into the body by being eaten with dirt or food (they can survive in sand, soil and clay). Then they hatch inside the gut and pass out in your childs stools. Fortunately worms are quite easy to spot. If your child complains of an itchy bottom, particularly at night, this is a tell-tale sign. It is caused by the females working their way out at night and laying eggs around the anus, you should check their stools for what looks like a piece of wriggling, fine white thread. Other symptoms may include irritability, restlessness and tummy ache.
